Taco Madness 2013, Vote for Los Feliz Favorite, Yuca’s!

Los Angelenos are out voting for their favorite taco. This online tournament, put together by LA Taco as a spoof to March Madness, brings our favorite tacos face to face to compete. In its 5th year, Taco Madness 2013, will present us with a champion, after three rounds of battles. The first round takes you to the “spicy 16″ level. The winners move on to the next level- the sabrocho (a play on sabroso & ocho) , the final four and the coveted final.

A local Los Feliz favorite in the line up is Yuca’s, who won the event in 2009. They have our vote …and you can give them yours too! This is also a great opportunity to taco taste a variety of types of tacos and L.A.’s finest.

Taco Madness Grand Park L.A. celebrates the event on 4/20/13 with food from many of the participants, several DJs, live mural painting and a beer garden. Visit their website for more details.

For $35, you can have your hair and make up done by make artists at the Joe Blasco Make Up School in Hollywood. Mr. Blasco has been generous enough to offer his amenities, location, and students for this charitable event. ALL proceeds will go to the Princess Aurora Foundation. The Los Feliz neighborhood council wants you to vote! Not only is your vote your duty. it is now a deal waiting to happen…

The Greater Griffith Park Neighborhood Council (GGPNC) elections will be held on October 6, 2012. In an effort to break 2010′s voter turnout, the Los Feliz Business Improvement District (LFBID) and the council have made arrangements with several restaurants and merchants to offer 20% discounts, along with other incentives to voters who visit with their “LOS FELIZ VOTES” sticker, which you would receive after successfully submitting your vote on “election day”. Anyone over the age of 13, who lives in Los Feliz, works in Los Feliz, or is a part of the Los Feliz Community can have their vote counted.

This year, ten district representatives will be elected for 4 year terms; 2 representavies will be chosen for each of the 5 geographical districts.

The Los Feliz Village Business Improvement District presents the 19th Annual Los Feliz Village Street Fair, this Sunday, July 22, 2012. According to police estimates, last year’s attendance was about 20,000 people strong. The event is held on Hollywood Blvd, between Hillhurst and Vermont Avenues. As posted on the LFBID’s website, “[Los Feliz] is a kind of community that celebrates its uniqueness and the biggest expression of that is the Los Feliz Village Street Fair!”

This all started in the early 1990s with a few restaurants and now has grown into a community of participating restaurants, shops, artists, musicians and other talents. Its all for our community, the community we love so much..our Los Feliz!

On his way to a meeting with a publisher, aspiring novelist Sam Wexler (Radnor) finds Rasheen, a young boy separated from his family on the subway. When the quiet Rasheen refuses to be left alone with social services, Sam learns the boy has already been placed in six previous foster homes and impulsively agrees to let the boy stay with him for a couple days. Dropped into Sam’s chaotic, bachelor lifestyle, Rasheen is introduced to Sam’s circle of friends; Annie (Malin Akerman) who has an unhealthy pattern of dating the wrong men, as well as an auto-immune disorder which has rendered her hairless, Mary-Catherine (Zoe Kazan) and Charlie (Pablo Schreiber) whose potential move to Los Angeles threatens their relationship, and Mississippi (Kate Mara), an aspiring singer/waitress who tests Sam’s fear of commitment. When Sam’s unexpected friendship with Rasheen develops, he realizes adulthood is not about waiting for the right answers to get the life you want, but simply stumbling ahead and figuring them out in the process.

All the World is a Stage!

“All the world is a stage” and this summer marked the beginning of a new theatrical tradition in the heart of Griffith Park. The great and classical works Othello and Much Ado About Nothing were the free productions performed July through August 2010. The Independent Shakespeare Company serves our community in creating inspiring and accessible classical theater and bringing it to as wide an audience as possible. Outgrowing the former venue at Barnsdall Park with over 12,000 viewers eager to watch, the stage is now set and serenely nestled in the natural sloping amphitheater of the Old Zoo in Griffith Park. Warmly dressed people gather around an hour or so before the seven o-clock performance begins. The scene is rich in community members who have brought along a picnic, family, friends and maybe a couple of dogs with plenty of room to stretch out. Great writing and performing skills take precedence over the technical elements of contemporary theater and the actors dynamic speaking and innovative staging were the primary means of engaging the audiences imagination. The ISC believes that classical plays should be readily available to all and since it is of our cultural legacy, like all great art, they are an important part of forming bonds. Speaking of bonds, the ISC also holds workshops on Shakespeare Performance for adults in which they can interact with the actors before the play, professionals and amateurs are welcome! There is also a Family Night workshop for the kids and parents where they are given the same opportunity with the actors and a brief and fun introduction to Shakespeare. All events are free and it’s a great way to get involved with your community and share an experience in an environment nostalgic of traditional outdoor theater. Griffith Park Now Home to Largest Lizards in the World…at LA Zoo!

Yesterday, the LA Zoo announced that 22 of the 23 hatched brand new Komodo Dragons now reside at the Zoo, from eggs laid in January by their mother, Lima. Komodos are an endangered species and are listed as vulnerable because they occur naturally in such a small area of the world in Indonesia. The Association of Zoos and Aquariums has set up a Species Survival Plan to manage the breeding of captive Komodos and protect the species for the future in case something were to happen to the wild population. The new additions are crucial for keeping the species alive! Breeding them in captivity is very difficult and less than 10 zoos in North America have been reported to breed Komodos. Only 14 to 20 inches long now with a weight of 3-4 ounces, they are reported to grow up to 200 lbs or more, being the largest lizard in the world! Komodo Dragons have a reputation for having a poisonous bite. They are immune to most bacteria, including E. colli, but can pass them along to animals or humans through their bite. In captivity, Komodos are fed cleaner food that virtually eliminates this problem. They are not on display just yet, but the hatchlings are expected to be in the Winnick Family Children’s Zoo in Griffith Park, CA.
