Taco Madness 2013, Vote for Los Feliz Favorite, Yuca’s!

Los Angelenos are out voting for their favorite taco. This online tournament, put together by LA Taco as a spoof to March Madness, brings our favorite tacos face to face to compete. In its 5th year, Taco Madness 2013, will present us with a champion, after three rounds of battles. The first round takes you to the “spicy 16″ level. The winners move on to the next level- the sabrocho (a play on sabroso & ocho) , the final four and the coveted final.

A local Los Feliz favorite in the line up is Yuca’s, who won the event in 2009. They have our vote …and you can give them yours too! This is also a great opportunity to taco taste a variety of types of tacos and L.A.’s finest.

Taco Madness Grand Park L.A. celebrates the event on 4/20/13 with food from many of the participants, several DJs, live mural painting and a beer garden. Visit their website for more details.

Delays on Los Feliz Blvd. Start Tuesday (4/2/13)!

Starting Tuesday, April 2, 2013, Los Feliz Blvd. will begin the LA DWP Reliability Improvement construction project. This will replace the underground power infrastructure and is believed to prevent future power outages. Crews will commence in different phases, the first being only one working lane on Hillhurst Avenue. The only left turn drivers will be allowed to make at the intersection is from westbound Los Feliz Boulevard southbound onto Hillhurst Avenue. The left turn from Eastbound Los Feliz will be unavailable during the construction times, which start at 9 am and may go on through until 5:30 pm, Monday through Friday. The bus stop at the northeast corner of that intersection will also be relocated.

Phase 2 will start in May of 2013, where Los Feliz Boulevard will be reduced to one lane in each direction between North New Hampshire Avenue to Cheswic Lane. There will be no left turn onto Los Feliz Blvd from Vermont.

All lanes are scheduled to reopen at the end of each work day, Los Feliz residents will be allowed to enter/ exit their driveways during construction, and all lanes will remain open during non- construction times. The project is expected to finalize in the fall.

Councilman Tom LaBonge says the project is necessary and urges drivers to take alternate routes. He commented, ”I personally, as a councilman, will accept all the congestion I could get as long as I get a new infrastructure.”

The Los Feliz neighborhood council wants you to vote! Not only is your vote your duty. it is now a deal waiting to happen…

The Greater Griffith Park Neighborhood Council (GGPNC) elections will be held on October 6, 2012. In an effort to break 2010′s voter turnout, the Los Feliz Business Improvement District (LFBID) and the council have made arrangements with several restaurants and merchants to offer 20% discounts, along with other incentives to voters who visit with their “LOS FELIZ VOTES” sticker, which you would receive after successfully submitting your vote on “election day”. Anyone over the age of 13, who lives in Los Feliz, works in Los Feliz, or is a part of the Los Feliz Community can have their vote counted.

This year, ten district representatives will be elected for 4 year terms; 2 representavies will be chosen for each of the 5 geographical districts.

The Los Feliz Village Business Improvement District presents the 19th Annual Los Feliz Village Street Fair, this Sunday, July 22, 2012. According to police estimates, last year’s attendance was about 20,000 people strong. The event is held on Hollywood Blvd, between Hillhurst and Vermont Avenues. As posted on the LFBID’s website, “[Los Feliz] is a kind of community that celebrates its uniqueness and the biggest expression of that is the Los Feliz Village Street Fair!”

This all started in the early 1990s with a few restaurants and now has grown into a community of participating restaurants, shops, artists, musicians and other talents. Its all for our community, the community we love so much..our Los Feliz!

Iranian & Armenian Celebrities Join to Honor Apick Youssefian

Apick Youssefian was a legendary actress in the pre-Islamic revolutionary Iranian film industry and is one of the pioneers in the genre of DRAMA in Iran.

In addition to being the first female producer in Iran, Apick has taken the leading role in nine major films, multiple TV shows, live theatre productions, and has been awarded Best Actress two years in a row by the Iranian national press. Apick Youssefian (who later with her daughter Mary Apick played in many of Parviz Sayyad’s films) were the leading characters of Iran’s first television series, “AMIR ARSALAN.”

Last Sunday, May 20, 2012, Iranian and Armenian beloved celebrities, along with many honorary organizations and figures, celebrated the legendary Apick Youssefian for her 60 years of devoted talent at a Gala tribute dinner in Glendale, CA.

A Tribute to Apick Youseffian

A unique, one-of-a-kind gala is coming up soon. This Red Carpet, Black Tie event is being presented to honor the lifetime achievements of the legendary Iranian actress for theater, television and motion pictures, Apick Youssefian. It’s an Evening of Stars and it takes place on Sunday, May 20th, 2012 at the Brandview Ballroom, 109 E. Harvard Street, in Glendale California. Starting at 5:30 PM, this unique event will be a celebration of 60 years in the field of entertainment for Ms. Youssefian. There will be many A-list celebrities – Persian, Armenian, and American – as well as community leaders, such as congressmen and the mayors of Glendale and Beverly Hills. A Champagne Reception will be followed by a magnificent sit-down dinner. Celebrities will be performing throughout, and many city and state officials and organizations such as ARPA International Film Festival will be presenting Ms. Youssefian with Life Achievement awards. The show is directed and produced by Mary Apick.

Apick Youssefian
One of the pioneers of the theatre, film and television industry in pre-revolution Iran, Apick Youssefian’s professional acting career started at a very young age with the Jaffari Theatre Group. This was followed by a starring role in Oskooi’s Theatre Group and Ms. Loretta. She earned recognition as Best Actress two years in a row by the national press. During her time in Iran, she starred in nine feature films and numerous television and stage productions, including Amir Arsalan, Ali Noghli, Sarkar Ostavar, and Octopus. She was the first woman feature film and television producer in Iran. She became so popular, and was so well loved, that the people of her home city named her Honorary Mayor. After being featured in the film The Legend of Omar Khayyamwith Diane Baker and Venessa Redgrave, and co-starring in a series of children’s videos, Apick Youssefian returned to the stage in the Critic’s Choice play Beneath the Veil,which was written produced and directed by her daughter; the Internationally Award Winning Actress and Human Rights Activist Mary Apick.

HIKE FOR THE HOMELESS…April 28, 2012 in Griffith Park!

Saturday, April 28, 2012, the Society of St. Vincent de Paul will host the 2nd Annual “HIKE FOR THE HOMELESS”. This fund-raiser’s proceeds will benefit the new Family Housing Project for Women and Children and the Cardinal Manning Center for the homeless on Skid Row in downtown Los Angeles. Over a thousand participants are expected to attend.

Hike Registration will start at 7am on Saturday, April 28th, 2012. There will be an Opening Ceremony and then the Hike will start at 8:30am. We’re looking forward to a great morning of hiking on April 28 and encourage everyone to come out and hike with us at this great family event,” says David Fields, the Executive Director of the Society of St. Vincent de Paul. Registration fees are $30 for adults, $20 for Students/Youth (under 21) and $5 for pets on leashes. Registration is available at www.hike4thehomeless.com or by calling (213) 229-9963.

On the day of the hike, participants will receive their Hike for the Homeless t-shirt and lots of pre-hike snacks. They will check in for the hike and then will be entertained with live music and an opening ceremony, before sending them out to tackle the hills of Griffith Park. This year there will be an Easy/Medium Difficult Hike and a Challenging Hike. After the hikers have scaled the hill, they will be welcomed back by more live music and breakfast burritos. It’s going to be a great event!

Los Angeles City Council-member Tom LaBonge will again lead the hike through his beloved Griffith Park. “I grew up with the Society of St. Vincent de Paul and attended it’s Circle V Ranch summer camp. They do great work and I’m proud to be part of their efforts to help people throughout Los Angeles during these tough challenging times,” says Mr. LaBonge.

Tow Truck Pursuit Through Los Feliz Ends in Glendale

Yesterday, many of us heard the helicopters above and watched on TV as several L.A.P.D. cars were in pursuit of the tow truck. He drove on Los Feliz Blvd. a couple of times, where at one point police even tried to throw a strip stick in front of him in an unsuccessful attempt to detour him. They ended up pursuing the tow truck to Glendale, where he finally surrendered.

Glendale police were concerned that the driver would enter the Americana or Glendale Galleria when he entered the city, said Glendale Police Sgt. Tom Lorenz. Lorenz said the suspect came to Glendale because he knew someone who lived in the city. “He wanted to give up here in Glendale,” he said. “He came here for a reason.” Lorenz said Glendale police turned the case over to LAPD after they apprehended the suspect. He was arrested for suspicion of assault with a deadly weapon.

The 31 year old man was released from Van Nuys jail early this morning, Wednesday, April 25, 2012, after posting $50,000 bail.
