Official Ceremony Held For Much Needed New Traffic Light!
If you are like most Angelinos, you spend a great deal of time in your car driving around and have noticed the new traffic light at the corner of Finley and Hillhurst Ave., that was just installed in June. The Los Feliz community needed a traffic light at that location and had been asking for one as a result of many speeding motorists and traffic accidents. The Los Feliz residents and community members gathered to “turn on the light” on June 22, 2010. Among the witnesses was Councilmember Tom LaBonge, who stated to have made funding possible for this light by the CRA, “I’m thankful to the Community Redevelopment Agency (CRA) of Los Angeles and the Los Angeles Department of Transportation for funding and installing this necessary light,” Councilmember LaBonge said. “This will make this intersection much safer for drivers and pedestrians in Los Feliz.” LADOT is pleased to have participated in the construction of this new traffic signal so that Los Feliz residents and visitors alike can cross at Finley and Hillhurst Avenues safely,” said Rita L. Robinson, General Manager.
In addition to all this, an official Blessing of the Light and Crosswalk ceremony was held by Father Christopher Kelley of St.Mary of the Angels Anglican Church, which is located at the intersection. Mya Rose Pecchia, a 5 year old girl, had the honor of flipping the switch on to the new traffic signal at 1 PM.
According to the city, the new traffic light will remove the uncontrolled crosswalk at Clarissa Ave. on Hillhurst Ave. where 6 pedestrians have reported being hit by motorists. There have also been a total of 31 reported accidents at the intersection since 2000.
