Mickey Mouse was Born in Los Feliz! Now For Sale…
December 17, 2009 Community, Real Estate
Did you know that Mickey Mouse was “born” in Los Feliz? Walt Disney moved out to California from Kansas in 1923 with only a few dollars in his pocket, and moved into his Uncle’s (Robert Disney) house, who lived at 4406 Kingswell Street, here in Los Feliz. He worked out of his Uncle’s garage and worked on his first animation to pitch to Alexander Pantages (Pantages Theatre). This first attempt was unsuccessful ( talk about bad decision making). It was here where he drew his first image of the now legendary character, Mickey Mouse.

Walt Disney's first residence in Los Feliz, currently listed for $799,000
(The Garage was moved in 1984 to The StanleyRanch Museum in Garden Grove, to be saved from demolition.)

In October of 1923, Walt and his brother, Roy, next set up shop behind the Holy-Vermont Realty Co. at 4651 Kingswell, only a few blocks away from their Uncle’s place. Their rent at the time was only $10 a month, and with an agreement with Alice Comedy Shorts, the Disney Bros. Cartoon Studio was born. The Alice Comedy Shorts was proven to be financially successful and shortly after the Disney Bros. bought a lot on Hyperion in Los Feliz with a deposit of only $400. Walt then decided to change the name from Disney Bros. to Walt Disney Studio. It wasn’t until 1938, that a purchase to Burbank was made and a move a year later.

In 1932, Walt and Lillian Disney bought their lot at 2495 Lyric Ave and Roy purchased the lot next door, each for $1000. Then, they both bought Pacific Ready Cut Homes, which were homes that were completely assembled and shipped to the site. The total cost after all was said and done was about $8000 each.

The historical Uncle’s House on Kingswell just got listed for sale at $799,000 on Dec. 9, 2009. According to the listing agent, it is a 2 bedroom/1 bath 1,458 sq. ft. California Bungalow, craftsman home, that was remodeled about 2 years ago. The property is being sold in its present “as is” condition. This may be a great opportunity to own a piece of history and make money on it too?

What a cool story! How neat would it be to say you live in the home where it all started for Walt Disney! That can be a moneymaker on its own!!!

Mortgage interest is not refunded. You have to complete a Schedule A and when you get your 1098 statement from your lender at the end of the year you put all of your mortgage interest on line 10 (Schedule A). More than likely you will be able to take the itemized deduction verses the standard deduction. You can not take both. You will be filing a long 1040 form as well since you will be using a Schedule A.
Very useful post. Bookmarked. Thanks for it!
