Along with the holiday cheers come traffic and stress!! But wait….Grifith Park Going Green this year…
As a Los Feliz Resident, I dread the opening of the Holiday season and the DWP light festival, which has been put on for the last 18 years!!! In past years, parents, grandparents, neighbors, and children packed up in mini vans, trucks, and cars and came strolling through the park to have some free holiday cheer. Kids love it, but drivers seem to think everyone comes to Los Feliz just to see this. They think you’re trying to cut in front of them only to get a closer look?? The traffic backs up as a result of this and is really unbearable and a just cause to either get the kids home quickly after school, before it gets dark, or to stay out late, find things to do, stall, and wait for things to simmer down at about 9:30 or 10.
This year, I noticed there were no cars waiting to enter Griffith Park on Wed. evening before Thanksgiving!! I was able to actually drive right up to my driveway at a normal pace of speed. Surprised, I looked to find out why things were so quiet…and wow…with the idea of going “green”, the DWP has set up walking only nights. What a great idea! Not only can the children visit the beautiful lights and hear the accompanying music, but they can also enjoy some “fresh air” and physical activity with their families!! They even offer a bike night to kick it off, tonight, Dec. 3. During these designated times, routes will be closed off to all vehicles. For those who can not make the walk, shuttle tours are also offered. I have posted the link below for more info.
How about starting your stroll a bit earlier and catching a a few glimpses of the classic Los Feliz properties surrounding the area? You might see a celebrity or two walking their dog…
As for my family, we will continue to visit the DWP light show for the “nth” time with the kids. We will actually walk from home, taking the time to admire the residential holiday decorations and classic architecture found only here in Los Feliz!
